READ FIRST! Lens (The New UI / UX) Known Issues

Hello!

The recent release of Lens Desktop that introduced all new UI / UX is the most substantial update since its inception and in our drive to deliver major improvements, we may not get everything perfect right away—but rest assured, we’re deeply committed to making Lens the ultimate tool for Kubernetes users.

Transparency is key, and we’re committed to being open about where we fall short and how we plan to improve. Your constructive feedback isn’t just helpful—it’s essential, and we encourage you to use these forums to share your thoughts and ideas. We deeply appreciate your patience as we continue to iterate and enhance Lens, and we’re incredibly grateful to those who are passionate about the tool and take the time to engage with us. Let’s keep the dialogue open as we work hard to make Lens the tool you’ve always loved—only better.

Known issues we are still refining

  • Fast Cluster Switching:
    • We are continuing to refine the experience to bring it on par with the legacy Hotbar functionality.
  • Mixed Tabs Across Multiple Clusters:
    • This has caused user confusion, and we are actively improving the experience.
    • Already Implemented:
      • Tabs and the Navigator are now colorized to simplify cluster identification.
    • In Progress:
      • The “Drill-Into” feature will automatically filter tabs based on scope, reducing visual clutter.

Known issues we are currently working on

  • Dock Functionality:
    • Terminal, logs, and other dock features should be scoped to clusters rather than individual tabs.
  • Navigator Usability:
    • Kubernetes resources (e.g., Nodes, Workloads) are difficult to identify due to missing icons.
  • Kubeconfig Management:
    • Adding a kubeconfig file is not currently possible via paste.
  • Namespace Selection:
    • Some users are unable to select namespaces within the UI. For a workaround define the accessible namespace in cluster settings.
  • Kubeconfig Compatibility:
    • Kubeconfigs using client.authentication.k8s.io/v1alpha1 are not displayed in the Navigator.
  • EKS Clusters Missing
    • If EKS clusters are missing, try to update aws cli to the latest version and recreate the kubeconfig file.

Issues we have already fixed

  • Performance Optimization:
    • Improved performance when opening tabs.
  • Cluster Search:
    • Restored the ability to search for clusters efficiently.
  • Command Palette Functionality:
    • Missing commands from the legacy version have been reintroduced.
  • EKS Cluster Tabs:
    • Tabs from EKS clusters now restore correctly after connectivity issues.
  • Theme Usability:
    • Resolved usability issues for both Dark Theme and Light Theme.
